The Library Lab is Moving

movingStarting Monday, November 26 the Library Lab at the New Westminster campus will be closed for the remainder of the semester. This is part of a larger plan to bring the Learning Centre, the Library and other services together into a greater space called the Learning Commons.

Step 1 is switching locations between the Library's computer lab and the Learning Centre. This will entail some renovations and a bit of noise, but we'll try to be respectful of students preparing for final exams.

We're looking forward to what these changes will bring to both the Library and the Learning Centre and welcome your feedback.

Food for Fines

Food for FinesAs usual, all outstanding library fines need to be cleared up by the end of the semester. But if you do so during the week of December 3 - 8, your money will go to a good cause. During that time period all proceeds from library fines will be donated to the Douglas Students' Union food bank.

Hey, if you have to fork over the money anyway, you may as well make it work for you!

Update

The Food for Fines campaign ran from December 3-8 at both campus libraries and was a resounding success! Monies collected during that week included, not only library fines, but extra cash donations students wanted to contribute. In total $477 and one big box of food was collected for the DSU Food Bank. Thanks to our Douglas College students the feedback was so positive, we'll definitely be running this campaign again in the future.

Join us for Trivia Night and help support libraries in Uganda

Busolwe Public Library, Uganda So you think you know it all? Well, here's a chance to test your general knowledge, have fun and help raise money for a library in Uganda.

On Thursday, February 9 from 7 to 10 p.m. at the Coquitlam campus of Douglas College, we are hosting a Quiz Night. Teams of four will compete against each other for bragging rights, and a few small prizes, while enjoying the repartee of MC Greg Garrison, snacks and some fun games of skill. There is also a cash bar.

Douglas College is joining with Coquitlam Public Library to raise $6,000 to equip the Busolwe Public Library in Uganda with books and solar power so the villagers can read and study in the evening, access a computer and hold community meetings.

The entry fee is $20 a person ($80 for the team of four). Rhian Piprell, director of the Coquitlam Public Library, has spent many weeks putting together the questions and coming up with prizes. I encourage you to challenge colleagues and friends, chat to your neighbours and enter a team. It will be a fun night, a chance to hang out together and enjoy exercising those little gray cells - all the while raising money to help others experience the joy of a library.

To register your team, contact Shelley Waldie by February 1 at 604-527-5180 or email her at waldies@douglascollege.ca. Payment can be via cash or cheque made out to Douglas College.

New library addition: the Kobo Vox

Kobo Want to find out if you like using an eReader? The Library has just added a new eReader, the Kobo Vox , to the collection of circulating eReaders. Along with the Vox, we have the Kobo Touch , the Amazon Kindle , the Sony Reader , and the Barnes and Noble Nook Color .

The Kobo Touch, Kindle and Sony are dedicated eReaders that use the e-Ink technology. The Kobo Vox and Nook are both in color and are more like tablets allowing you to surf the web and download apps. To find more information about all the different tablets and e-readers on the market you can take a look at Consumer Reports review of Tablets and e-Book Readers in its September 2011 issue . Burnaby Public Library also has information on their website on choosing an e-book reader and West Vancouver Memorial Library has an eBook Wiki .

All these devices, except for the Kindle, will allow you to download and borrow books and audiobooks from the public library. All BC libraries have access to British Columbia's "Library to Go" . You will only be able to borrow a book or audio book using the library card from the public library where you live. Many of the public libraries have clinics and guides on how to help you, like this one from the Coquitlam Public Library on downloading audiobooks & e-books .

Happy reading!

Just keep it covered and don't let it smell!

Food in the Library Those are the two main guidelines we have recently adopted concerning food in the library. We know you need your snacks to keep you fuelled while hitting the books, just make sure your beverage has a lid, and that lid stays on. Accidents happen, but if we can try to avoid them happening around the books and computer keyboards, everyone will be happier.

Which brings us to food: yes, bring it in but make sure it doesn't smell, even smell good! Those tempting smells wafting through the stacks can be bothersome to many. That means keep the hamburgers and fries in the cafeteria and save your quick snacks for the library. Studying is hard work, you need to eat, we just ask that everyone help keep the library clean and odour-free so that it continues to be a great place to study.

From the publisher: "The study of children's illustrated books is located within the broad histories of print culture, publishing, the book trade, and concepts of childhood. An interdisciplinary history, Picturing Canada provides a critical understanding of the changing geographical, historical, and cultural aspects of Canadian identity, as seen through the lens of children's publishing over two centuries.

Gail Edwards and Judith Saltman illuminate the connection between children's publishing and Canadian nationalism, analyse the gendered history of children's librarianship, identify changes and continuities in narrative themes and artistic styles, and explore recent changes in the creation and consumption of children's illustrated books. Over 130 interviews with Canadian authors, illustrators, editors, librarians, booksellers, critics, and other contributors to Canadian children's book publishing, document the experiences of those who worked in the industry.

An important and wholly original work, Picturing Canada is fundamental to our understanding of publishing history and the history of childhood itself in Canada."

ConstructionWe're donning our hardhats! Renovations to the New Westminster campus Library begin Monday, December 21st and continue through January. The Electronic Library Facility (ELF) will be closed for the duration, but if you're looking for an available computer, try the 5th and 6th floors. If you're an instructor and would like to book a Library Research class, please contact Lisa Sim or Patti Romanko.

Our collection is also temporarily moving around a bit. You'll find the CDs at the back of the library in the AV lab sitting on shelving trucks for the time being, and the LP records have been moved entirely into storage. If there's something you need though, just ask at the front counter and we'll retrieve it for you.

Double-sided vs. Single-sided Printing: an update on printing changes
Did you click on the print icon and wind up with a double-sided document? Did you really want it to be single-sided?

In an effort to go green, the College has set up the libraries and computer labs to default to double-sided printing (referred to as duplexing). Students are charged per sheet, potentially doubling the 300-page printing limit if one always prints double-sided.

But, sometimes you may still want to print single-sided. Here's how:
    1. Select the Office Button in the upper left corner (the round ball).
    2. Select Print, then Print again. The Print dialogue box opens.
    3. Select the Properties button in the upper right corner. The Document Properties dialogue box opens.
    4. Uncheck the box beside Print on both sides.
    5. Click on OK, then OK the next dialogue box as well.
    6. Your document will now print single-sided. This printing option will remain until you either manually change it back, or log off the computer.
You'll find these instructions and a handy reference card beside each printer. More information on printing.

The Coquitlam campus library, always a pleasant space, has become even better thanks to recent renovations. To support the move of Health Sciences programs to Coquitlam, the library moved its Nursing and health related books and audio visual collections from New Westminster to the Coquitlam campus library. The lower level of the library was expanded and new stacks, lighting and flooring were installed to accommodate the collection from New Westminster.

The main level of the library was also expanded to create a new space for video and DVD stacks, conveniently placed near the library entrance. Now all the AV software and listening/viewing stations are in one place. Large windows make the library much brighter and more cheerful.

    More Drop-in Study Space
The reconfiguring of the photocopy room and the AV area has created more drop-in study space, an addition that is much appreciated by students.

"The Academic Year in Three Semesters"
    Quilted Wall Hanging
    Triptych Size 45" x 39" each
    2003

Each letter block symbolizes a month (January, February, etc.) arranged in three semesters. The block after each letter is representational of that month, with a snowflake for January, a stylized rose for June, an old brick house in autumn sunlight for September, and so on. Then the rest of the blocks are library books, sheet music, a CD, and a computer. All of it arranged on library shelves. The idea was to represent the library throughout the academic year, weaving together the seasons with library motifs.

Electronic Course Reserves at the Library
The library is now able to provide electronic access to certain types of reserve material through the Library catalogue. Printed material such as lecture notes, sample assignments, past examinations, musical scores, etc. are scanned into graphic files that are then attached to records in the Library's database and stored on its Web server. Material already existing in graphic form (PDF, GIF, JPG, TIF) may simply be imported into the system. Links to full text articles in the Library's periodical databases and to web resources may also be added to the listing of material available for a particular course.

Library users may view and/or print electronic reserve material by using the Library catalogue either on campus or remotely. Access is restricted to those who are currently registered with the Library as students and College employees. The user's name and barcode on library card are needed to determine eligibility to use this service.

    New Library Catalogue
The College has purchased a new library system. What does this mean for library users?
    • The library's catalogue will be available via the Web and may be accessed 24 hours a day from anywhere in the world.
    • Library patrons will be able to limit searches of the catalogue to material type, such as videos and scores, or to a specific campus.
    • Users can access their own patron records to view material checked out using a password driven system.
    • Secure self-serve options, such as the ability to renew material and place holds and bookings, will be introduced once the system is up and running.
    • While these enhancements are exciting, there are sure to be some "interesting" things happening during our transition period. Please bear with us as we learn this new system!

    September 9, 1999

    Renovations
The Library at the New Westminster campus underwent renovations during the summer. Here are some of the changes you'll notice:

Library space has been used to build two new computer labs. The entrance to these labs is via the corridor outside the library.

All study tables on the main floor have been moved to the front of the library. Reference and periodical stacks have been shifted toward the north wall. The House of Commons Debates and some of the Dominion Law Reports have been taken out of the Reference collection and placed in storage. So if you wish to see them, ask at the Information desk.

The Adaptive Resource Lab is now situated close to the entrance of the library. The photocopier room has also been moved, but is still located at the front of the library.

The following items are still on the main floor, just moved to different locations:
newspapers, pamphlet file, atlas stand, microfiche/film reader/printers, telephone books and College and University calendars.

On the second floor, extra floor space was added and is being used for study carrels. The Mac Lab was moved to the Student Society Building.

If you can't find the item or section you are looking for, please ask!

    Something "Innovative" at the Library
Innovative Interfaces On August 1, 1999, the College signed a contract with Innovative Interfaces for the purchase of a new library automated system to replace the aging INLEX system installed in 1990. What does this mean for library users?

The biggest improvement will be that the library's catalogue will be available via the Web and may be accessed 24 hours a day from anywhere in the world. It will also be possible to limit searches of the catalogue to material type (e.g. - video) or to a specific campus. Secure self-serve options, such as the ability to view material checked out, renew material, and place holds and bookings, will be introduced once the system is up and running smoothly.

While these enhancements are exciting, there will undoubtedly be some "interesting" things happening during our transition period. The crux will come later in the Fall semester, as we prepare to go live before January 2000.

Please bear with us as we learn to use the system, and stay tuned for further developments and updates on our progress.
